During her Union Budget speech, Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced that public sector banks would enhance their in-house capabilities to assess MSMEs for credit, reducing reliance on external evaluations. The new credit assessment model will leverage the digital footprints of MSMEs, even those without formal accounting systems, to better evaluate their creditworthiness. This model represents a major shift in how banks approach financing for MSMEs, moving beyond traditional credit assessments based on assets or turnover. It aims to address the limitations of the existing methods, which often lead to either under-financing or over-financing, hampering the growth and sustainability of MSMEs.
