Goa’s First MSME Maritime Cluster Receives Fresh Momentum with New Tenders October 7, 2024 MSME Sampark Msme News 0 The Konkan Maritime Cluster, Goa’s first dedicated MSME cluster, has received a much-needed push as the Directorate of Industries, Trade, and Commerce (DITC) has re-floated tenders to advance the project. This renewed effort aims to overcome the challenges faced during the earlier phases of implementation, bringing the micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSME) cluster closer to completion. The DITC has issued five new tenders for the procurement of equipment to be installed at the common facility center, which will form the core of the maritime cluster in Verna Industrial Estate (Phase IV). A senior DITC official stated that the cluster currently has 57 MSME members, all of whom are focused on boosting Goa’s shipping and shipbuilding industry. The total investment for the maritime cluster stands at ₹16.2 crore, with ₹12 crore being contributed by the Ministry of MSME, ₹1.5 crore by the state government, and the remaining ₹2.7 crore by the local MSMEs involved. The tenders represent the state’s contribution to the project, facilitating the purchase of essential machinery. Earlier in January 2024, the initial tender process did not yield a satisfactory response, primarily because the required machinery was not readily available in India and had to be imported. Additionally, delays in constructing the work shed, which was completed in July, and a legal petition further slowed the project’s progress. However, the petition has now been resolved. DITC officials remain optimistic that this round of tenders will attract better responses due to modifications made in the technical specifications of the equipment, based on input from cluster members. The Khadi and Village Industries Board is overseeing the project, while DITC is serving as the nodal agency. The maritime cluster is set to provide a significant boost to Goa’s MSME sector by enhancing capabilities in the maritime industry, creating job opportunities, and promoting local economic growth.
