MSMEs in North Bengal to Flourish with Government’s ₹15 Crore Plan April 1, 2025 Rahul Singh Msme News 0 Kolkata: The West Bengal MSME and Textiles Department has introduced a series of initiatives to promote micro-level enterprises in North Bengal, aiming to boost employment and strengthen the region’s economy. Announced by State MSME and Textiles Minister Chandranath Sinha at the regional Khadi Fair, these initiatives include a ₹15 crore allocation for infrastructure development and financial aid across Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, Kalimpong, and Cooch Behar. The funding will support micro-units and self-help groups, helping them expand operations, enhance production capabilities, and create jobs. To improve market access for small businesses, the government plans to establish multiplex centers in every district under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. These centers will provide dedicated spaces for self-help groups and entrepreneurs to showcase and sell their products. Additionally, sector-specific support has been introduced, including ₹1.3 crore for vermicompost pits in Mainaguri, Jalpaiguri, benefiting 130 youth, and ₹1.5 crore to assist 1,000 farmers in Matiali block in millet cultivation. The government has also allocated ₹1 crore for a khadi marketing center in Falakata, Alipurduar, to promote traditional textiles. Artisans and handloom weavers are also receiving targeted support. In Cooch Behar, 2,000 shitalpati artisans have been granted ₹1.2 crore in financial aid, while 26 mekhla weavers have received ₹8 crore. Additionally, 250 beekeepers in the hills have been provided ₹2.5 crore to enhance honey production. In an effort to revive Bengal’s handloom industry, the state will soon introduce a franchise model named ‘Banglar Sari,’ where private companies will manage the marketing and sales of traditional Bengali sarees, helping weavers expand their market reach. These initiatives align with West Bengal’s vision of fostering a sustainable MSME ecosystem by providing financial aid, infrastructure support, and market access. With a strong focus on skill development, employment generation, and economic inclusivity, the government aims to empower local entrepreneurs, artisans, and farmers, ensuring their long-term growth and contribution to the state’s economy.
